The MOD Hearing Loss Matrix Agreement, Explained
By the MOD Hearing Help editorial team · Last updated 13 July 2026
The Matrix agreement is the High Court-approved settlement scheme for UK military noise-induced hearing loss claims. Sample claims were tried in court to set valuation guidance for thousands of others, and the deadline to join was extended to 31 July 2026. Around 24,000 people have claimed; up to 70,000 may be eligible.
Instead of every veteran fighting the Ministry of Defence individually, the High Court tried a small number of representative sample claims. The rulings — and the settlement guidance built on them, widely called the Matrix — now determine how remaining claims are valued, based on factors like the severity of hearing loss, tinnitus, and career impact. During the proceedings, the MOD's counsel told the court the potential total liability could reach £50 billion, according to Forces News. In January 2026 the MOD agreed to a six-month deadline extension, to 31 July 2026, welcomed by the solicitors leading the 24,000-strong group action as a way for ex-service personnel to be compensated "quickly and without the stress of a long, drawn-out legal process."
What the Matrix means for you in practice
- You do not need to take the MOD to court yourself — your claim is valued against the guidance
- Outcomes are more predictable: comparable injuries receive comparable awards
- The process is designed to be faster than historic military deafness litigation
- One hard deadline applies: your claim must be started by 31 July 2026
Watch out for fake "official MOD scheme" ads
Forces News has reported scam adverts implying a false link with the MOD programme. No claims firm is "the official scheme". Legitimate services are no win, no fee, and will never ask for an upfront payment to start a hearing loss claim.
